Why volunteer for us?

  • Volunteering for Ashtead Good Neighbours is enjoyable, fulfilling and very rewarding. It is a flexible commitment with absolutely no pressure to accept any particular job unless it suits.
  • Our volunteers come from all age groups, and just a few hours on an occasional basis makes a huge difference to the local community. Most volunteers opt to carry out one or two jobs per month.
  • There are no set days or hours, just times to suit you.
  • Our clients are truly grateful for the help they receive.

If you are interested in joining Ashtead Good Neighbours, an experienced volunteer interviewer will visit to explain fully what is involved and arrange a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

All new volunteers receive full support from the Volunteer Co-Ordinator and Management Team ensuring that help will always be on hand.

Driving

  • Most of our volunteering involves driving.
  • Volunteers drive their own vehicles to collect the client from home, drive to the appointment, usually wait for them and then ensure that they are driven home safely again. On occasion, when an appointment is for an extended period of time, one volunteer will take the client and another pick up later in the day.
  • Our main destinations include GP surgeries, hospitals, opticians, dentists, physiotherapists, podiatrists etc.
  • Mileage costs can be claimed at an agreed rate.
DCO

Daily Coordinator (DCO)

  • Our clients request our help by calling the Client Booking telephone line, which is open from 10am until 12 noon every weekday. They must give us at least two days’ notice.
  • The Daily Coordinators, who nearly all drive for us as well, monitor this telephone line on average once a month. We have an online booking system which records the job request and suggests suitable volunteers based on the availability they have given us. Once the DCO has found a willing volunteer, they will call the client to confirm acceptance of the job and give details of the volunteer taking them. It is an ideal opportunity to get to know our clients and other volunteers.
  • Experience of driving jobs is essential before becoming a DCO.

Shopping: We can also help with shopping on a temporary basis (for example after an operation).

In addition to our Annual General Meeting, we hold two further events and as a volunteer, you and your partner are invited to join the Team at these social gatherings. It enables everyone to meet, socialise and keep up to date with new developments, share experiences and general good practice.
